Note: If you are viewing a local site that has no corresponding remote site, the Remote Site pane is empty.
To view the site map and the site files, do one of the following:
Choose Window > Site Map. (If you previously viewed the map only, without the site’s files, this displays the map only.)
In the Site window, click the Site Map button, or hold down the mouse button with the pointer over the Site Map button and select Map and Files from the pop-up menu.
The pane displaying the local site as a map is labeled Site Navigation; the other pane displays either the local site files (labeled Local Folder) or the remote site files (labeled Remote Site), depending on the Always Show preferences you set.
To view only the site map:
Hold down the mouse button with the pointer over the Site Map button and select Map Only from the pop-up menu.

Changing site displays
By default, the remote site (or the local site map) appears in the left pane of the Site window and the local site appears in the right pane. You can switch these displays.
To set which panes the local and remote sites appear in:
1
Choose Edit > Preferences and select the Site FTP category.
2 Do either of the following:
Select Local Files from the Always Show menu, and then choose whether to display the local files in the right or left pane of the Site window.
The local site will appear in the pane you have selected, and the remote site (or the site map) will appear in the opposite pane. When you choose this option, the local site files view is always shown in the Site window, even when you collapse the window to one pane.
Select Remote Files from the Always Show menu, and then choose whether to display the remote files in the right or left pane of the Site window.
The remote site will appear in the pane you have selected, and the local site (or the site map, which is always local) will appear in the opposite pane. When you choose this option, the remote site files view is always shown in the Site window, even when you collapse the window to one pane.
3 Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box and apply changes.
To change the view area:
In the Site window, do one of the following:
Drag the bar that separates the panes to increase or decrease the view area of the right or left window pane.
Use the scroll bars at the bottom of the panes to scroll the contents of the panes.
In the site map, drag the arrow above a file to change the space between files.
To collapse the Site window to one pane:
Click the small triangle button in the lower left of the Site window.
Note: The pane that remains visible is whichever pane you chose to always show in the Site FTP preferences dialog box.
For more information about site preferences, see “Setting Site FTP preferences”

Creating and editing HTML documents
Now that you have a site set up, you can begin to create the documents (pages) that constitute the site. (If you haven’t set up a site yet, see “Creating a local site”
on page 78.)
You can create new, blank HTML documents in Dreamweaver, or you can open an existing HTML document, regardless of how it was created. You can also create a new document based on a template.
Note: When you save your documents, avoid using spaces and special characters in file and folder names whenever possible.
To create a blank HTML document in a new Document window:
Choose File > New from an existing Document window (Windows) or from the main menu bar (Macintosh).
